My name is Gary Burge. I am a fully qualified and experienced Solution Focused Hypnotherapist based in Plymouth. After spending many years working for various engineering companies in Plymouth, South Devon, I decided to train as a hypnotherapist.

I have always been fascinated by hypnosis and its ability to change people’s lives. I signed up for a course at the award winning Clifton Practice in Plymouth where I gained my HPD (Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma), a qualification which is considered to be the “Gold Standard” in hypnotherapy.

I specialise in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, which is a well researched and highly effective brain based therapy that uses modern strategies that help to create positive changes in people’s lives.

I am a member of the Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (AfSFH) which ensures that a high level of professional standards is maintained by its members by adhering to a strict code of ethics.

Fears or Phobias

People who have phobias tend to feel very nervous and panicky about one thing in particular. The thing that you might be anxious about may not be troublesome to anyone else but can make you feel really nervous or panicky. Most people know that their fear or phobia is irrational, but feel powerless to change how they react to it.

People can have a fear or phobia of just about anything. Some of the more common ones include flying, spiders or insects, needles, heights, open or confined spaces, snakes and the dark to name a few. Hypnotherapy is highly effective at treating almost all phobias and fears. I can normally help you overcome specific fears and phobias in 4 sessions.

The first session is the initial consultation, during this free session I explain how the brain works and how we can create our fears or phobias. The second session is a relaxation session where you can experience relaxing and soothing trance. In this session I will also explain to you what will happen in the third session.

This session starts with a bit of revision and then quickly moves onto the rewind technique. This technique is highly effective at removing the template in your mind that holds the phobia or fear.

The fourth and final session is called the re-frame where we start with some revision from the previous sessions. We then do some more trance work and get you to a place where you are free of any anxiety regarding your specific phobia or fear. When you leave, you will be positive, ready to move forward and free from your phobia or fear reaction.

Stress and Anxiety

Anxiety is the feeling of fear or panic. Most people feel anxious, panicky or fearful about certain situations. Sometimes, anxiety enables us to cope with difficult situations and protects us by preventing us doing things which would put us at risk.

Prolonged anxiety however can be a real problem and can affect our every day lives. Symptoms of anxiety can include feeling frightened, nervous or panicky all the time. You may also feel down or depressed and have difficulties sleeping and eating, be unable to concentrate on things and feel irritable and tired.

You might experience palpitations or a racing of your heart, dry mouth, panic attacks, trembling, faintness and you may also experience stomach cramps or diarrhoea. All of these symptoms can be very debilitating and can affect our friends, family and our ability to work or carry out normal daily activities.

Sometimes, anxiety can be caused by certain upcoming events, such as an interview, an exam, a presentation or a driving test. Other times it may be caused by a past trauma or parental conditioning.
